Martin Stepanik
composer, pianist,
improvising artist
Since more than twenty years Martin Stepanik is one of the most interesting composers/ keyboarders working in the wide field of electronic music and Jazz in Vienna.
Leaving his roots of acoustic jazz and improvised music in 1985 Stepanik pioneered the new Viennese electronic music scene being a founding member of “Die Vögel Europas”. From 1986 to 1992 this band toured frequently throughout Europe and recorded with artists such as F.M.Einheit of “Einstürzende Neubauten” and Elliott Sharp.
Next step was Stepaniks founding of Lovely Ritain 1991. The project pursued, in a changing line-up (5 to 8 musicians), a consistent development from a jazz-inspired group to an experimental-electronic pop-band. "Lovely Rita" is a "working band" exploring diverse possibilities of musical expressions including a very distinguished jazz-standard program (On The Edge Of Tenderness), a avantgardistic but although groovy pop-program (Levitation), a freaky zappa-show (Who the hell is F.Z.), a theatre program (Der Enthusiast), a film & live-music program (Der Seelenputz) and ... right now "Lovely Rita" is on tour with 2 brand new shows "My Life Between The Exit Signs" (film & live-music project) and "Strolling Along The Abbey Road" (a homage to the Beatles) ...
In his long career as an performing and recording artist, Stepanik worked with many well known musicians such as Bobby McFerrin, Sheila Jordan, George Gruntz, Fred Frith, Joey Baron, F.M.Einheit (Einstürzende Neubauten), Elliot Sharp, Marc Ribot and many others ..
With these artists and with his various ensembles (Voegel Europas, Zärtliche Zöllner, 2Face2, Lovely Rita) he toured all over Europe and the U.S.A.
Stepanik is leading a regularly jazz-piano master-class at the Anton Bruckner University for music, dance and theatre in Linz (Austria).
He is giving workshops concerning various topics like "polyrhythm, electronic sound sources and pop music", "concepts of freedom (about free improvised music)", "the art of comping" and others ... at the university in Linz, Graz, Wien, and elsewhere...
